The Revolution in Permanent Hair Removal
Whatever they may be called, IPL, I2PL, ELOS, XPL, EPL, etc., traditional hair removal systems – including laser, IPL and LEO-tech, among others – are highly developed, usually carefully calibrated, work with individual pulses and are fairly efficient. They are exclusively geared to target melanin, the hair’s pigment, which absorbs the energy pulse and destroys the papilla by briefly heating it to 70 °C. However, these treatments can have adverse side effects. Since the skin also contains melanin, it absorbs energy. If the treatment parameters aren’t set carefully enough to match the skin and hair color of the patient, it can lead to burns and unsightly scarring. In most cases, significant treatment experience is necessary in order to define the correct parameters for each individual application.
SHR technology only targets melanin peripherally. Its primary target are the stem cells that produce new hair. SHR operates with low fluence but high optical power and multiple pulses at a rapid repetition rate of 10 Hz. This new technology allows for treatment in motion, i.e., we glide over the treatment area with the handpiece, and the treatment area is heated while sapphire contact cooling protects the epidermis (skin).
The light pressure applied with the hand piece supplies the necessary compression to keep blood and tissue fluids that shouldn’t be heated away from the treatment area. This and the new gliding technology "In Motion" represent a breakthrough in light-based permanent hair removal. This makes the “pulse-by-pulse” method used with IPL and laser devices superfluous, and the adverse side effects associated with this method (checkerboard, time) are avoided. Precise placement of the hand piece as in single-pulse treatment is also unnecessary.
Melanin and the protein of the stem cells are the target chromophores. This means that even dark skin types, pigment-poor hair (blonde, red, gray) and fine hair can be treated successfully! Furthermore, treatment isn’t only possible during the growth phase (anagen) as with the conventional systems, but also during the resting phase (telogen), as this is when the stem cells prepare for re-growth. From our diet we already know that proteins lose their life-giving properties when they are heated above a certain temperature.
SHR technology enables uniform heating of the treatment area to 45 °C, wherein the surrounding tissue serves as an energy reservoir. The temperature of the hair papilla and their stem cells is therefore also maintained by the surrounding tissue.
After 6 - 8 rounds over the treatment area, vertically and horizontally, perifollicular edema usually sets in, indicating the success of the treatment. The stem cells have been switched off.
The choice of targeted chromophore permits the conclusion that the hair’s growth phase has lost its meaning for the order of the follow-up treatments. After all, stem cells are present in the telogen phase as well.
ADVANTAGES OF THE SHR SYSTEM
Because the same area can be treated several times, the energy source is gentler and reaches optimum intensity by repetition of the pulses. The treatment is much more comfortable than with conventional systems, and the skin is better protected. Unlike traditional methods, SHR is the only system worldwide that can effectively treat tanned skin with high energy density.

WHAT ROLE DO SKIN COLOR, HAIR COLOR AND HAIR THICKNESS PLAY?
As with conventional technologies, light skin with dark and thick hair responds best to the treatment. However, SHR technology includes the protein of the stem cells as target chromophore in addition to melanin. This means that dark skin types and pigment-poor, fine hair can be treated successfully as well! And thanks to SHR, tanned skin can now be treated effectively for the first time.
WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?
Unlike treatments with conventional IPL and laser devices, the treatment is virtually painless. On areas with dense hair, a warming sensation as well as the light pulses can be felt, but only minimally compared to flash lamps or lasers.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NECESSARY?
Until now, treatment depended on reaching the hair during the growing phase (about 20-30%). With SHR, the hair in the telogen phase can be successfully treated as well because the stem cells are preparing for new growth at this time. However, since the growth phase cycle varies from person to person, 4-8 treatments are necessary on average. Approximately 3-5% of people unfortunately don’t react to any of the permanent hair removal methods.
ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?
Some body parts are more sensitive than others, which may lead to redness of the skin. This redness usually subsides after a few hours, but it can also have the intensity of a sunburn and persist for a few days. Unlike conventional systems, slight scabbing (which disappears after
2 to 3 weeks), blisters and pigment changes (these disappear after 4 to 6 months) are extremely rare.
WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED BEFORE THE TREATMENT?
If you tan outside or at a tanning salon before or between treatments, please let us know
at least 3 days before your next treatment so that we can recalculate the optimal treatment parameters for your new skin tone. This is the only way optimal treatment is guaranteed.
Please don’t pluck or wax hair 6 weeks prior to the treatment. Shaving is permitted. Please
shave one day prior to treatment and drink about 2 liters of water per day 1 to 2 days before the treatment.
WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AFTER THE TREATMENT?
The skin’s natural sun protection is greatly reduced following the intense light treatment. Please wear sunscreen (SPF 30 to 50) for at least one week after the treatment.
